Your tyres are one of the most important safety components on your vehicle. They’re the only contact between your car and the road, and they play a major role in braking, steering and handling — something every driver in Carlisle and Cumbria notices on wet, icy or gritted winter roads.
But how do you know when your tyres need replacing?
There’s no specific mileage at which every tyre must be changed. Tyre life varies with mileage, driving style, road conditions, tyre pressures, wheel alignment and the overall condition of the vehicle. That’s why regular checks matter.
Check your tyre tread
For cars, light vans and light trailers in Great Britain — which includes both Cumbria and Dumfries & Galloway — the legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread and around the entire circumference of the tyre.
However, waiting until your tyres reach the legal limit isn’t good practice. Tread depth has a big effect on grip in the rain, and Cumbrian weather gives tyres plenty of work.
Check your tyres regularly for both tread depth and general condition. If you’re unsure, have them inspected by a qualified professional.
Look for cuts, cracks and bulges
Tread depth isn’t the only thing that matters. When checking your tyres, look for:
- Cuts
- Cracks
- Bulges
- Sidewall damage
- Objects stuck in the tyre
- Excessive or uneven wear
- Signs of deterioration
A tyre can have plenty of tread left and still be unsafe if it has significant damage. Potholes and kerbs on rural roads are a common cause of sidewall damage and bulges.
Uneven tyre wear can point to another problem
If one part of the tyre is wearing much faster than another, the tyre may not be the only problem.
Uneven wear can be linked to incorrect tyre pressures, wheel alignment, braking or suspension faults. GOV.UK advises having faults that cause excessive or uneven tyre wear corrected as soon as possible.
Replacing the tyre without fixing the underlying issue could mean the new tyre develops the same problem. Our servicing and repair team in Carlisle can check the cause as well as the tyre.
Check your tyre pressure
Correct tyre pressure is important for safety, handling and tyre wear.
The Highway Code advises checking tyre pressures weekly, before a journey and when the tyres are cold. You’ll normally find the correct pressure for your vehicle in the handbook or the manufacturer’s information.
Incorrect pressure can affect braking and steering and may cause abnormal tyre wear. It’s especially worth checking before a long journey — for example heading south on the M6 or north on the A74(M) — and when carrying extra passengers or luggage.
What about a puncture?
If you get a puncture, don’t just keep driving.
Deal with a flat tyre as soon as it’s safe to do so. Driving on a flat or badly damaged tyre can cause further damage and may make the vehicle unsafe.
GOV.UK advises that you should only change a flat tyre if you can do so without putting yourself or others at risk. Otherwise, contact a breakdown service.
This is where mobile tyre fitting is particularly useful.
When should you replace your tyres?
A tyre may need replacing if it is:
- Below the legal tread requirement
- Damaged
- Showing significant cracks or deterioration
- Bulging
- Unevenly worn
- Continually losing pressure
- Otherwise considered unsafe
The replacement tyre should be suitable for your vehicle and correctly fitted. If you’re unsure, a professional inspection is the safest way to decide whether a tyre can still be used.
